Night 1: Ann Arbor, MI

The vacation has begun! The ride up was fairly uneventful, except for a stop at an absolutely pristine rest stop near Jackson, MI. Normally I fear rest stops and prefer to empty the bladder at Mickey D's, but Jackson rest stop, I salute you. We arrived in Ann Arbor, checked in at our hotel (free HBO woo!) and headed downtown. In case you're wondering, "Why Ann Arbor?", let it be known that Double A is one of my favorite towns because I visited it often when my brother and sister went to U of M. We went to dinner at Pizza House, had some delicious Bell's Oberon beer, then ate our dinners: chapatis. Chapatis are these absolutely delicious (and humongous) salads served in whole wheat pitas. Post dinner, we walked around town, got some bubble tea (cold milk tea with gelatinous balls in it. Yeah, I said gelatinous balls) and checked out the campus, including a stop at Pinball Pete's, an arcade which had a lot of games with Japanese directions and some girls actually climbing into the skeeball game in order to get more tickets. Amusing note: Brian loved Ann Arbor because we found a radio station that played constant Metallica. In less manly music news, there was a cute house in town with a bunch of dudes on the front porch drinking and listening to Howie Day. I didn't know that was how to get the ladies' attention. Post walk we headed back to the hotel and found some unexpected excitement: a Bennigan's!!! We thought Bennigan's were no more, but apparently Michigan residents still want their Turkey O'Toole's and Caribbean crab cakes. We of course stopped for a Bennigan's brewski. After that, we called it a night. Tomorrow: Niagara Falls!

Welcome!

Welcome to Em Wants to Go to There, the official travel blog of Emily and Brian Hit the East Coast: Summer 2009. The title is a play on Tina Fey's line on 30 Rock, "I want to go to there!" Unfortunately, www.iwantogotothere.blogspot.com was already taken. We will be leaving for our trip next week, heading to places such as Niagara Falls, Boston, Philly, Salem, and, of course, the house where Lizzie Borden killed her parents. Apparently it's been turned into a charming bed and breakfast. Who knew? Along with this blog (which will be posted on Facebook as well), Brian and I are also doing something called Trip Tracker which will show online exactly where we're at as well as pictures of what we're up to. If you would like to be included on the email list for that site, just send me an email or a message on Facebook and I'll get that set up. You'll be hearing adventures from the road very soon!
